We always read this term SSD in the computer or laptop specifications page.SSD is a memory storage device that we use in Computers or Laptops. These SSD are seen as a replacement to the traditional Hard Disk Drives that we use on a daily basis. Many high end Laptops already come with an SSD.So Let's have a look at what actually is an SSD,its advantages and disadvantages over an HDD.
What is SSD
SSD stands for Solid State Drive.SSD is a memory storage device that we use in computers and laptops.
SSD are made using semiconductors just like we manufacture RAM storage as SSD is also made using flash storage technique.
HDD vs SSD
Hard Disk Drives that we traditionally use have many mechanical moving parts which cause a lot of problems.
Life
Like as the typical hard drive has a 5400rpm motor to move between traditional disks to transmit data as their are many mechanical moving parts the life of the hard drive is nearly 5 to 6 years depending upon use .In comparison as their is no mechanical motor in SSD the SSD has a life of upto 15 to 20 years.
Speed
The SSD has a higher memory accessing speed as we access memory with the help of memory chips. While in traditional HDD we have Disk Drives that has slow memory accessing speed.
Power Consumption
In an SSD as there are many moving parts we require more amount of power to drive all these mechanical components. While in an SSD as data is stored on Memory chips the power consumption is quite less thanks to the advanced PCB designs.
Noise or Vibrations
A typical hard drive creates a considerable amount of noise. But the newer SSD are very Silent as no moving part is involved it creates no noise or vibrations
Physical Damages
A normal Hard Drive is prone to Physical Damages if the hard drive slips or falls in an accident we might have issues like data getting lost. While SSD are resistant to any such accidents and function smoothly even after a large physical damage.
Portability
When it comes to portability SSDs are much smaller as compared to HDD.
Disadvantages of SSD
Less Storage capacity
As SSD is a newer technology we still find it hard to manufacture a SSD with large capacities like 4TB ,10TB.While The Typical HDD are capable of doing so.
High Cost
The SSD that we see in the market are much more costlier than Typical Hard Drives
Availability
As SSD is a new technology we are not yet manufacturing it on a larger scale and therefore they are not easily available in the market.
